uzbek suzani
from the persian word for needlework, suzani are the embroidered textiles from central asia that are used as wall hangings or bed covers in the home.
suzani have traditionally formed an important part of a bride’s dowry. assisted by their mother and female relatives, young girls would commence sewing their dowries as soon as they were able. a relatively well to do young woman would produce up to ten large suzani in time for her wedding. with their intricate patterns and fine detail, each piece can take up to two and a half years to complete.
