This collection builds upon the basketry tradition of the Wounaan, an indigenous group from El Chocó, where the jungle meets the sea on Colombia’s Pacific coast. The weave is so tight that these vessels have traditionally been used to carry water from river to village. Each piece is one of a kind.

Preparing the werregue fiber—harvested from a thorny palm exclusive to the region—involves its own distinct handiwork: strands are rubbed rapidly between the weaver’s hands, the friction giving the palm its distinctive sheen. The weaving itself, shaped into a spiral pattern, takes months to complete—thick fibers forming the soul around which thinner fibers are meticulously wrapped.
