Barro Negro Lamp with Ball Pull

The clay–known as barro negro–from which these table lamps are made is exclusive to the Sierra Madre mountains in the Mexican state of Oaxaca. Local legend holds that the clay is blessed.

The deep, inky color is the result of the unique properties of this indigenous clay combined with a firing process in which the smoke and heat—and deprivation of oxygen—creates an intense carbonization effect.

Prior to being fired in an underground, wood-burning pit, the pieces are meticulously burnished with a curved quartz stone, marking the clay with a subtle sheen.

Created in collaboration with maestro Amando Pedro, our long time friend and collaborator, in his workshop in San Bartolo Coyotepec, we drew inspiration for the shape from ancient cántaros, the traditional vessels used to transport and store mezcal.

    Our Piedra lighting takes its inspiration from the stone masks of the ancient civilization of Teotihuacán. Carved in the Mexican city of Tecali — which means ‘stone house’ in Nahuatl — these wall sconces and semi-flush mount lights draw on the clean lines, defined angles, and streamlined silhouettes that epitomize the pre-Colombian stone masks. Sculpted from carefully chosen marble or onyx, each piece reflects the unique character of the individual stone from which it is formed.

    Talabartero Saddle Lamps

    The lamps in this collection are inspired by Colombia’s equestrian heritage, layered with a jewel-toned color palette that takes inspiration from the works of Colombian artist Fernando Botero.

    Talabartero translates as ‘master saddler,’ and the collection draws upon the expert craftsmanship and fine detailing—the stitching, the braiding and the hand tooling—that characterize the best of vintage saddles from the area.

    Each lamp is crafted from natural grain board-formed leather, guided by the same formation techniques as those used in fashioning saddles, with curves reminiscent of the figures in Botero’s paintings.

    We’ve partnered with master craftsman Edgar Beltrán Jaramillo and the skilled team in his Bogotá-based workshop to bring this collection to life.

    Tarz Collection

    The bedcoverings in this collection represent a pairing of Moroccan traditions. The cotton panels draw on the weaving done for centuries to create haik—a traditional, long rectangular woman’s garment that wraps and drapes around the body. Our blankets, woven on pedal looms in the town of Ouazzane, mimic the weave and coloration of the haik, while the individual panels of the blankets are then bound by varying embroidery (tarz) stitches, in both traditional and modernized renditions.

    With a textured, ribbed weave achieved by spinning seven individual cotton threads together, the blankets have a soft, organic heft.

    Werregue Collection

    The Wounaan are fishermen, and they fish in both the river and the sea. They work with a wide range of fishing nets (redes), which vary according to the season and the location, with the biggest difference between them being the size of the spaces in the net.

    Given the nature and story of these Werregue palm pendants, the tightly woven fiber results in an opaque shade, with a focused spot light emanating from the bottom mouth of the fixture.

    This collection is inspired by the distinctive shape and character of the piña—the heart of the agave plant—from which mezcal is made. Each lamp is individually and expertly coaxed to form in Oaxaca, where mezcal has played a vital spiritual and ritualistic role in community life for centuries. The handblown forms capture the beautiful heft of the piña, revealed in the undulating glass structures. The lamps reflect an organic symmetry that nods to both the role of nature and to that of the human hand.
